Elaine Wynn will be the keynote speaker at the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce Business Power Luncheon on Wednesday, May 8. Wynn will share her perspective on education reform and the progress the State Board of Education is making in its mission to improve K-12 education in Nevada.
As the President of the State Board of Education, Wynn leads the state wide governing body that sets K-12 education policy in Nevada. The mission of the State Board of Education is to elevate student performance by ensuring opportunity, facilitating learning and promoting excellence in the classroom.
Also at the luncheon, Jan L. Jones Blackhurst, Executive Vice President, Communications & Government Relations for Caesars Entertainment Corporation, will be awarded the Free Enterprise Award by Nevada Taxpayers Association, Employers Association of Southern Nevada and the Metro Chamber. The award is presented annually to a distinguished community leader who has made a significant and lasting impact on the Southern Nevada economy.
About Elaine Wynn
Wynn has served as Director of Wynn Resorts since 2000, and has helped guide that company's successful
expansion. She is an active community leader and hands-on advocate for education excellence. In 2010,
she was appointed by then-Governor Jim Gibbons to co-chair the Education Reform Blue Ribbon Task Force, which made education reform recommendations to the state legislature. She is the founding chairman of Communities in Schools of Nevada, and is the current President of the national board of Communities in Schools. In addition, she serves as a Trustee of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, a board member of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and a board member of the Library of Congress Trust Fund. She is a Founder of The Smith Center for the Performing Arts and is a past Chairman of the UNLV Foundation.
About Jan L. Jones Blackhurst
Jones Blackhurst is Executive Vice President, Communications & Government Relations for Caesars Entertainment Corporation. Prior to joining the company in 1999, Jones Blackhurst served two terms as mayor of the City of Las Vegas. During her eight-year tenure, Las Vegas was the fastest growing city in America and was named the No. 1 city in the nation for entrepreneurs by Inc. magazine. Jones Blackhurst is the former chairwoman of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and a former director of the Nevada Resort Association. She currently serves as a director of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Women's Campaign Fund in Washington, D.C. She also is a member of the Women's Leadership Board at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
