Bill for Phoenix to Vegas freeway advances
A new interstate that would connect Phoenix and Las Vegas is on the map -- almost.
The route of Interstate 11, the ambitious project of transportation officials and powerful business interests in Arizona and Nevada, survived a final revision of a long-delayed transportation-funding bill this week.
The bill would officially designate the I-11 route, making the project eligible for interstate highway funds. It also would mean supporters have cleared the first major political hurdle, although building any highway could take up to two decades.
The U.S. House of Representatives is set to vote today on the transportation bill, with President Barack Obama expected to sign it into law soon after.
