A social networking and micro-blogging service that enables you to send and read messages known as "Tweets." Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the user's Twitter page and delivered to the user's followers. Twitter's popularity is because its communication is instantaneous and to a large amount of people.
Twitterers sometimes use Hashtags (#) to mark the subject of their tweets, making it easy for people to search conversations (e.g. #Vegas) they would like to get involved in and find people or businesses they might want to follow.
Businesses can run last minute sales and immediately broadcast to all their followers. If Dell is having a slow month, they can Tweet their latest sale and it will potentially hit 1million people who have "opted in" to their Tweets. www.twitter.com.
Best used to connect with people you already know. You can add and communicate with friends through messages and status updates to notify friends about what you're currently doing or how you feel about something.
Facebook allows you to build your community by joining networks organized by city, workplace, school, and region. www.facebook.com.
Get your clients to be your sales people by giving testimonials all while building community... like Volkswagon: http://www.facebook.com/VW.
An online site to network with fellow professionals. The focus of LinkedIn is building your business contacts, posting testimonials, finding people in your field, hiring or finding a job. It is very helpful if people you know switch jobs and their email is no longer active- you'll always be able to contact them since their LinkedIn account won't change. www.linkedin.com.
Much like Facebook, but you have the ability to customize your profile which is far different from the clean look of Facebook. Customizing the profile makes it more useful for creative types- artists, musicians (songs can be uploaded) and people with portfolios like models. Haven't been signed to a record label? Upload your music, promote your MySpace page and build a community of fans. www.myspace.com.
A video sharing website on which you can upload and share videos. You can comment, rate, bookmark and embed videos into your own websites. You can sign up for YouTube at www.youtube.com.
Don't own a TV station? Start your own channel on YouTube, just like Intel: http://www.youtube.com/user/channelintel.
