Obtaining a Business License in Las Vegas

All businesses that operate inside the Las Vegas city limits must obtain a business license from the Secretary of State Office. This Las Vegas business license grants you permission to engage in the business for which you are licensed. If you decide to engage in any other business, a new license must be obtained. Privileged licenses, which are licenses that require special approval by the Las Vegas City Council, can take sixty days or more. Special licenses include: liquor licenses, gaming, secondhand shops, pawnshops, child care licenses, locksmiths, burglar alarm services, martial arts schools, auctioneers, mobile food vendors, mobile ice cream vendors and massage establishments. Privileged licenses must be obtained through the Business Services Division of City Hall.

To apply for a general business license, you will need to have obtained all of the required licenses from the Nevada Department of Taxation, a completed City of Las Vegas application form and the necessary fees. The non-refundable application fee is $30 dollars for each license. For a new business, license fees must be paid at the time the application is filed. Fees can range from $25 to $1,200 dollars, depending on the license classification.

Home businesses are also required to obtain a Home Occupation Permit if the residence is located inside the city limits. According to the City of Las Vegas, there is a $50 dollar fee for a Home Occupation Permit.
