New Program Aims to Stop Dropouts

The Clark County School District has long had one of the highest dropout rates in the country.

A new program aims to change that. Superintendent Dwight Jones is leading the program. It pairs students in danger of not graduating or dropping out with Las Vegas business professionals. The professionals work to get the students back on track.

Superintendent Jones announced a partnership with the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce Tuesday. It is part of his on-going effort called "Reclaim Your Future." He headed a similar effort in Colorado.

The Future of Infrastructure in Las Vegas

The freeways are being widened and McCarran has a new terminal but does that cover Las Vegas infrastructure needs? Could new roads and railroads really strengthen the economy in Southern Nevada? And what else will diversify the kind of business that is carried on in Nevada?

Mall at Planet Hollywood Resort starts yearlong philanthropic push

By Caitlin McGary

Large corporations often sponsor charitable campaigns, but it's a little unusual for a shopping mall to launch its own yearlong philanthropy effort.

Angel Williams, community relations and business development director for the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort, said it's also unusual for a mall to create a position like hers -- someone in charge of community outreach and philanthropic campaigns.

School district, LV Chamber call on community to help at-risk students graduate

Today, Clark County School District Superintendent Dwight D. Jones, along with the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, Workforce Connections and United Way of Southern Nevada, called on the community to become volunteer mentors to help at-risk high school seniors graduate through the new Reclaim Your Future program.

The Reclaim Your Future program pairs at-risk seniors who are a credit or two short of meeting graduation requirements with an adult mentor. Mentors meet with their assigned student once a week to provide encouragement and inspire confidence.

Las Vegas home sales set record

Institutional and private investors contributed to a record year for Las Vegas home sales in 2011, but prices are being held down by cautious appraisers and the high number of foreclosure sales, real estate brokers and analysts said Monday.

A total of 48,186 single-family homes and condos were sold in Las Vegas last year, topping the previous record of 46,879 set in 2009, the Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors reported Monday.

Downtown Las Vegas among nation’s 10 ‘great’ urban neighborhoods, report says

By Kyle Hansen

Score one for former Mayor Oscar Goodman and his showgirls: Downtown Las Vegas is officially "fabulous."

In a USA Today listing of 10 "great" urban neighborhoods to explore across the country, Richard Florida, a senior editor for The Atlantic magazine and a professor at the University of Toronto, said downtown Las Vegas is “a fabulous area with great urban energy.”

It’s quite the compliment for an area that saw a steady decline as the Strip grew and “Fabulous Las Vegas” shifted south.

Interstate 11 - The Missing Link

Proposed Interstate would connect Southern Nevada to an economic lifeline

The Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce is supporting efforts to develop the proposed I-11, an interstate highway that would connect Phoenix and Las Vegas to major shipping ports in Southern California and Mexico.

Las Vegas and Phoenix are the only two sizable cities in the nation without a direct interstate connection. Supporting this measure could lead to dramatic, positive changes for Nevada, including new job creation and a significant means for diversifying and strengthening the local economy.

Las Vegas-Phoenix interstate plan moving along

WASHINGTON -- Plans to upgrade the road between Las Vegas and Phoenix to interstate quality are getting a boost in a highway bill advancing in the U.S. Senate, officials said Wednesday.

A provision in the bill makes the route eligible for federal funding for improvements and new construction, according to the office of Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev.

Leaders of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce have lobbied for designation of an Interstate 11 corridor, most recently this fall during their annual visit to Washington.
